You can copy it to a back up location with Finder or a with a backup program and it can be opened directly in its new location. (It is actually a package file which means in some ways it is more like a folder) but for purposes of backing up or re-locating it can be treated like any other single file. Your managed Aperture library is effectively a single large file. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, especially in Luddite-compatible language! Photography is just a hobby and computers are a tool, so I'm trying to keep it relatively simple. And I'm a little upset it has to be so complicated.
CHRONOSYNC OLDER VERSIONS DOWNLOAD MANUAL
I've read the Aperture manual and scoured these forums, but am not confident in my plan. Until now my very unsophisticated backup system consisted of downloading photos to a second computer and keeping the original SD cards in a safe place.
CHRONOSYNC OLDER VERSIONS DOWNLOAD UPDATE
But I've learned my lesson from Iphone updates: don't update the system without backing everything up first. I'm not tech savvy and I'm very short on time, so was dismayed to find that Aperture couldn't recognize my Canon SL1 RAW files unless I downloaded the relevant update, which of course requires updating my computer from Snow Leopard to Mavericks.

I've used Aperture since 2011 on a 27" Imac and have a library of 12,000 photos in a "managed" library.

And I'm a little upset it has to be so complicated. I've read the Aperture manual and scoured these forums, but am not confident in my plan. (By the way, I do have Time Machine, but the fact that I can't search TM for individual photos gives me no confidence that my library is truly backed up safely.) So, how do I back up the library in a usable form (usable even if I eventually switch to Lightroom or some other program) while still being able to use Aperture for the time being with a managed library? Do I export all the projects to the hard drive first, into the photos folder? Do I create Vaults, though not I'm not sure I understand them? Does this have to be done project by project, or can the whole library be moved at once? if possible to keep the orignal masters in a managed library so I can continue to use Aperture as I have been to develop a backup system external to the computer, I suppose on an external drive or twoĤ. to not lose or alter my entire Aperture library in the processģ. to update to Mavericks so I can get these new photos into my computerĢ.
